Must Visit Places in Key West, Florida

Planning a trip to the Florida Keys?! I've got the best places you need to visit when you are in Key West.

Where to stay?

Rose Lane Villas is where we stayed for 4 nights and 5 days. This place is the absolute cutest place, great location, had all the amenities you need and was located right off Duval St. So you are pretty much able to walk wherever you want.

They have a beautiful pool area, that isn't too big and it isn't too small. It's like a little oasis for the days you do not want to go exploring or go to the beaches. We spent one afternoon at the pool area and saw an Iguana that was just chilling in the area as well.

We had a one bedroom villa, but the couch in the living room was a pullout. So for the 3 of us, my mom, husband and myself, it was perfect. They have a few different room options if you need more than one bed. Each villa also comes with one parking spot, which was perfect for us as well. I'm not sure what the parking situation might look like if you have more than one vehicle.

Where to eat?

There are so many places to eat here! Stay tuned for a section on happy hour!

If you are driving down to the Keys, then I highly recommend you stop at Robbie's the food is great, the atmosphere is fun and the servers are nice. But after you are done eating and drinking, head over to feed the Tarpon! Yes, you heard me right. There are so many Tarpon there waiting to be fed, it was honestly such a great experience and something I never thought I would ever do, and I didn't even know that it was a thing. The fee to feed the Tarpon is: $2.25 per person, and then $4.00 for a bucket of fish.

When you are out feeding the Tarpon there are TONS of pelicans waiting to snatch your fish! If you've never fed a Tarpon before, this is the spot for you!

Wahlburgers - Ok, now here me out, before this trip to Key West, I've never been to a Wahlburgers and let me tell you it exceeded my expectations! I expected it to be set up like a fast food restaurant, but it wasn't the case at this location (I can't speak for other locations). It had a smaller indoor area, and then a very nice outdoor covered area that included a really nice bar. I'm not sure if it was how hungry I was, or how much I had to drink earlier in the night but this food was AMAZING!

We had The Our Burger w/Mac and Cheese and the Truffle Fries, which I 1000% recommend. These were the best truffle fries that I have ever had. My husband ended up ordering the Wahlbrewski, which was not that bad. It was a little too hoppy for me, but of course we had to try it!

La Grignote - This place was super cute and we had some of the best breakfast here! This cafe is located on Duval St and was within walking distance from our villa. My mom actually found this place while she was endlessly scrolling through TikTok, she came across Shay Spence, if you haven't heard of him he lives in Key West and works for People magazine. He tells you amazing places in Key West that are a must and I completely agree with him on this breakfast spot.

Harriett's Restaurant - This place is located in Key Largo, they are known for their World Famous Key Lime Muffins, I will say I did not have a Key Lime muffin but I did bring home a chocolate chip muffin, and this was one of the best muffins I've ever had. We stopped here on our way to the airport and it was a cute little spot off the road. It was very busy, we almost were unable to stay and have breakfast here but they were nice enough to let us eat at the diner counter. This was another amazing breakfast spot! I ordered their Avocado Toast and Eggs and my husband ordered eggs, sausage and hash browns. If you are in the area whether you are coming or going, this is a must stop place!

What Can I Do in Key West?

Fort Zachary Taylor Historic State Park is a MUST! There is so much to do here, not only can you take a self-guided tour of the fort, you can also head to the beach there which is absolutely beautiful. If you head to the beach, make sure to go buy some cheap water shoes because it is a very rocky beach. We did not have water shoes, and our feet suffered but it was worth it.

Fort Zachary Taylor is not free, you will have to pay when you go there. We walked from our villa to the fort, and for pedestrians and bicyclists, the fee is $2.50 per person. If you take a car, the fee is $4 per vehicle.

I enjoyed the way we did Fort Zachary, we went straight to the Fort to take our self-guided tour and learn about the history of the fort. This took us a little under an hour, you can spend all day there if you wanted. After the fort, we went straight to the beach, there are signs throughout the state park telling you where the beach is. When you get to the beach parking lot, head left, towards the picnic benches, this is where the beach is. There is a lot of room and when we went it was busy but it wasn't miserable. If you wish to have a picnic, or bring food and snacks, I highly recommend visiting the website prior to going to see what you can and cannot bring.

The water at this beach is beautiful! And it was peaceful. We spent a couple of hours here, soaking up the sun, splashing in the water and reading books.

Key West Cocktail Cruise

Sunset cocktail cruise in Key West Florida, Florida Keys

If you have not ever done a sunset cruise, let alone a cocktail sunset need to! My mom and husband surprised me with this cocktail cruise for my birthday and let me tell you it was the perfect time. I can't wait to do it again! If you don't know what a cocktail cruise is, it is a 2 hour sunset cruise that has ALCOHOL on it! There are 3 different options when you book this specific cruise:

  • Craft beer & Wine

  • Craft beer, wine & champagne

  • Cocktails, craft beer & wine

I'm going to tell you right now, if you like craft beer and wine, then do that one. It is priced perfectly and you get an unlimited amount of each of them, but this package was perfect for us. We had a fun captain and bartenders, they played music and were very attentive. The captain was very informative and could tell us anything that we were curious about. After about an hour, we got to the destination to watch the sunset and not only did we see a beautiful sunset, we also saw a handful of dolphins. I cannot recommend this company enough!

The Key West Butterfly and Nature Conservatory is kind of pricey BUT it is beautiful, there are over 1,500 butterflies at this conservatory. If you are local to the county, then there is a $2 off discount. Not only are there butterflies, there are also different plants and a pair of flamingos! Which when we were there, they were very noisy! Which we discovered was because it is mating season for flamingos (we went at the beginning of May). If you are lucky enough then you will have multiple butterflies land on you during your time at the conservatory. If you are looking for something to do, or if the weather turns out to be a rainy day, definitely head to the Key West Butterfly and Nature Conservatory!

Smathers Beach

This beach is another must! Unlike Fort Zachary beach, there are no rocks, at least huge ones that will hurt your feet here. The water here is also very gorgeous and clear! It is a little noisy as it is close to the airport, so you will hear airplanes taking off quite often during your time there. There is street parking at this beach, but we ended up taking an Uber to and from the beach. When we were here the water was low, so we were able to make our way out pretty far without having to worry. The water was not only clear and beautiful, it was also warm too! Though the beach is by the airport and it can get noisy from the planes, the beach is very big and was not packed when we went, it was really enjoyable when we were there.

Happy Hour!

Grand Cafe - This place was hands down the best happy hour I've probably been to in a long long time. Not only were the drinks and appetizers 50% off during happy hour, certain drinks they gave you a little bit extra which was amazing! Grand Cafe is located.....can you guess?......Duval St! Do you see a pattern here?! Duval is where it is happening! Their bruschetta and conch fritters were absolutely amazing! We could've stayed here all night drinking and eating all the appetizers. They have both indoor and outdoor seating, it was a beautiful afternoon/early evening so we sat outside, but if you do go here be sure to head inside and see the inside as this is actually a Victorian Mansion.

Mangoes- Again, located on Duval St, Mangoes atmosphere was a fun and inviting atmosphere. We came here after a day at the beach and had a quick drink and bite to eat, I highly recommend the Drunken Mussels, if you like garlic and beer then this is for you!

If you have been to any of these places, I would love to hear your thoughts! I hope this little guide of what to do, where to go and where to eat helps you out. I know before I go somewhere I always do research and love any suggestions!
